well THAT was a goddamn clusterfuck

So I just finished watching True Blood S4 and I'm actually KIND OF MAD, lol. Idek you guys, I was pretty fucking pissed about Jesus kicking it, but at least I saw that coming from a mile away, and I could have gotten past it. (And the results of that may be... uh, interesting, to boot.) But TARA. WHAT THE FUCK. THAT WAS SO FUCKING RANDOM. WHY WOULD YOU EVEN FUCKING DO THAT. IT DOESN'T EVEN MAKE ANY SENSE. GODDAMN.

Fuck you, True Blood writers. No srsly, fuck you. I've mostly been merely hilaritized by all your shock-factor camp writing, which is the reason I've watched the show to this point, but you've taken this shit too far. This was just completely random and pointless. Fuck.

(And I notice the characters you just killed off were two of the only three major poc AND queer characters on the cast, not to mention taking away the two most important ppl in the world to the remaining poc queer dude. Have you even killed off any other major non-villain characters? Oh, I mean, besides Tara's boyfriend from a previous season, who was GUESS WHAT ALSO A POC. Don't think I don't see what you did there.)

Idek if I want to watch the next season. I'm curious as to what happens to Lafayette, but lord knows they're just going to make him as miserable as possible, so I'm not sure there's any point.

The way they shit on Lafayette is what killed my love for this.
Nothing ever good happens for him and it pisses me off.

Omg, IKR?! Tara too! I mean in fairness, EVERY character in this show has to experience ALL THE ANGST, ALL THE TIME, but they really take it waaaay too far with those two.

(I read somewhere that Jesus's actor said they'd told him he wasn't getting offed for anything he did, he was great, it was just that happy relationships couldn't last b/c they were boring. FUCK YOU, writers, happy relationships are only boring IF YOU ARE TOO FUCKING LAZY TO MAKE THEM INTERESTING.)
Jan. 13th, 2012 08:54 pm (UTC)
I am sick to fucking death of that shit in sci-fi and fantasy. Happy relationships are pretty much the foundation for most crime procedurals; especially between main characters yet in fantasy and sci-fi it can never last. It makes no sense whatsoever. I do not constant drama or I will stop caring.

Arrgh to think I like Jesus for something so damn stupid...

S4 is one big giant mess, isn't it? I liked the Lafayette-as-medium arc, but that was really THE ONLY thing I didn't feel the writers massively and spectacularly dropped the ball on. They even managed to make me hate Pam this season, and usually, whatever else they do wrong, Pam can at least get a laugh out of me.

And the entire Marnie/Antonia plot? Talk about your Broken Aesop. Really, you're going to moralize about hunger for power and bullying and revenge ON A SHOW ABOUT VAMPIRES? When you let the aforementioned vampires off scot-free? Presumably because they're hotter than Marnie? What is this I can't even. Marianne kind of made me twitch as a villain (because clearly, sex and pool parties will ruin us all, amirite? XDD), but at least she made sense to me in a way Marnie just doesn't. And, you know, did extra-special bad things like mind-control whole towns and eat people's hearts, whereas Marnie just acts like half the vampires we've seen and DIDN'T get a whole moralizing speech about. Seeing all that judgment passed on her WITH ERIC LITERALLY STANDING RIGHT THERE was one of the most surreal moments this show has had for me yet...

As for Tara, what makes the whole mess triply annoying to me is that the writers had been screwing her over for most of the previous two seasons. And then they finally gave her room to move around outside of someone's prison, and she was awesome, and then they shot her in the fucking head? REALLY? As I understand it, they've signed the actress on for S5, but IDK if that's just for flashbacks or somesuch.

Marnie WOULD have worked for me if they had handled it better, b/c omg I have seriously MET this woman, but yeah....... everything you just said about the vampires etc. ._.a

My guess is that Tara is either going to be a ghost (the ghosts of the two ppl Lafayette cares most about following him around, here, let's shove that angst muffin farther down your throat), or she's going to get turned into a vamp, b/c gdi that's just the sort of thing this show would love to do to her.
Jan. 13th, 2012 05:49 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I agree that if the writers had put more thought into Marnie, she would have worked better. Into that entire plotline, really--that could have been the most interesting villain situation they'd had yet, but instead it left me scratching my head. They wrote Marianne well enough that I could roll my eyes at some of the sillier aforementioned points, because I believed this woman as a manipulative psycho just from the way she messed with the leads, never mind all her other mind-control and heart-eating shenanigans. And Russel was just a full-stop, camp magnificent bastard whose lack of complexity actually ended up working in their favor IMO. WORK HARDER ON YOUR VILLAINS, SHOW. YOU MANAGED BEFORE.

Vampire!Tara had occurred to me, for the exact reason you mentioned: after giving her a rather reasonable aversion to vampires due to season after season of plot, wouldn't it just be the worst thing to turn her into one? The only reason I'm not completely sure on this is that they already did it to Steve Newlin (another plot thread I'm expecting them to either mishandle or just...forget about), and I don't know if they'd do it twice?

I'd rather see vampire!Tara than no Tara or disembodied-occasional-Tara-who-is-Lafayette's-ghost-buddy, but it still annoys me as a development. At this point, she is the one 100-percent normal human character (aside from Jason, who could probably stand to get less play) with a major role in the story. Now she is a mixed martial artist with a three-year history in dealing with the supernatural whose COMPLETELY MUNDANE EFFORTS in outwitting the S4 bad guy all but won the day. Why don't you just...turn her loose as is, writers? Completely despite yourselves, you built something brilliant, and then you went and wrecked it.

Also, was I the only one who found that whole "exorcism" scene disturbingly minstrel-show-esque? Random, I know, but it's been bugging me since I saw it.

And I think if either of us brave S5 we should have a drinking game. One shot for every major plot thread dropped unceremoniously, two for every plot thread resolved but massively mishandled. It seems like they're taking on more every season, but doing all of it less well...

UGH, IKR. What the fuck is WRONG with them? How could they not see how awesome she'd become? IA that I'd rather have vamp!Tara than ghost!Tara or none at all, but it was much cooler that she was that badass w/o even being the least bit supernatural herself.

Also, was I the only one who found that whole "exorcism" scene disturbingly minstrel-show-esque?

Which do you mean, the one w/Mavin? B/c that made me a little uncomfortable but I couldn't figure out why.

The downside of that drinking game idea is that it'd have to be done all at the end of the season when all plot threads could be tallied, and I have the feeling that would be TRIP TO EMERGENCY ROOM levels of liquor to drink all at once. XD;
Jan. 13th, 2012 06:10 pm (UTC)
Yeah, that one. I don't know why it pinged me as LOOK AT THE SILLY BLACK PEOPLE SINGING SONGS, but that's how it read to me. Perhaps because it looked so little like a recognizable church exorcism of any kind, and so much like "now they will sing a cheerful song and wave sage around! Aren't they funny?" >>;;

And you're right: we COULD only properly assess the damage at the end of the season. So perhaps this idea IS untenable, and we should come up with some other debauched method of tallying that's less likely to kill us.
Jan. 13th, 2012 06:18 pm (UTC)
It was some pretty random shit, yeah. (Also I was pretty confused by the sage.) I think they were trying to make it "ironic" or whatever by having Arlene burp out her usual unconsciously racist shit and have everyone stare uncomfortably, but yeah....... no. It didn't really work for me either.

Also if we drank during the show it might be less head-desk inducing.

Belated but omg Metropolis icon!

You can use it if you want! It's one I made.

i stopped watching when the 4th season started due to the shock factor shit they were pulling, but i still love tara so much. how could they kill her off? she was the best part of the show. :(
Jan. 21st, 2012 01:08 am (UTC)
late reply but I DON'T KNOW, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING. Her actress is actually signed on for next season, but I'm thinking it's as a ghost. (Or possibly a vampire, since they'd love to do something that awful to her.)
Jan. 19th, 2012 05:38 am (UTC)
Wow, that bad? I'm glad I stopped partway through s3 and just stuck with the books.
Jan. 21st, 2012 01:12 am (UTC)
I've never read the books b/c I preferred the characters of the show - frex, Lafayette's my favorite and he's only a one-book murder victim in the books, and the awful shit I have heard about book!Bill... Well, I don't like TV!Bill much but at least he's not THAT unpalatable. And quite honestly I have enjoyed this ridiculous shock-factor camp they've got going on, but they've gradually been taking it farther and farther and TARA AND LAFAYETTE ALWAYS GET THE WORST OF IT, WHY. I mean damn.
Jan. 21st, 2012 03:36 am (UTC)
Yeah, Lafayette was one of the reasons I kept watching. They took virtually nothing and made him into one of the more likeable characters.

The show and the books kept getting farther and farther apart, and I just eventually couldn't take the over-the-top let's-make-everything-trashy-and-totally-torture-them-all that the show fell into.

I don't think book!Bill is that bad. He made some mistakes and hid some things, but seems like a decent guy...er, vampire overall. TV!Tara is SO different than book!Tara. Like they're two completely different people who happen to share a name and a friend.
