NO. 6 YOU GUYS. YOU GUYS, NO. 6.

So like. A week or two ago I watched the first few episodes of No. 6 thinking it was going to be yet another crappy excuse for slashy boys, because sometimes those are fun, right. But then it was like. WHAT. DID I JUST WATCH. THIS IS ACTUALLY LIKE. GOOD?!! Also: EVEN GAYER THAN ADVERTISED, HOLY CRAP.

No. 6 is a futuristic dystopian sci-fi (with serious BL aspirations) crossed with an episode of Fringe (also with serious BL aspirations), running in the famous noitaminA time slot. Also, why aren't you watching it right now. Seriously, what is wrong with you.

Premise: When Nezumi (Rat) and Shion are both 12, Shion loses his chance at the high life by helping Nezumi, who'd escaped from a correctional facility, evade capture. In return, when Shion later gets into seriously deep shit, Nezumi shows up to save him. (He knows Shion's in trouble on account of his ARMY OF ROBOTIC RATS THAT SPY ON THE CITY FOR HIM.) Oh yeah, and there are also creepy parasite wasps that hatch in your body and cause you to age and die in a matter of minutes as they burrow out of your neck. Idek.

Here's the opening, which is awesome.

This is Nezumi.

He's a rather violent chap who's in a CONSTANT HAM-OFF with the ENTIRE UNIVERSE (which, as moonsheen pointed out, he wins by virtue of having his VERY OWN ARMY OF ACTUAL ROBOTIC RAT SPIES), and waves his arms around so exuberantly and grandly it's a miracle he doesn't put someone's eye out. He's also a Shakespearean actor and literature nerd. I feel this explains so much about his personality.

(Holy crap, you guys, I was expecting the "Nezumi plays women on stage!" reveal, but I didn't expect it to be... so hot.)

This is Shion.

He's a sweet kid. He's the naive and sheltered genius type. If you can ignore the fact that he reacts COMPLETELY INAPPROPRIATELY AND FEARLESSLY to life-threatening situations, you might be tempted to think him the only sane character in this show. MISTAAAAAKE.

(There are no sane characters in this show.)

So anyway, last night I watched ep5 of this show, and I legit cannot interpret this narrative as anything other than a romance anymore. I mean.

So Nezumi just randomly grabs Shion... and starts dancing with him.

...WHILE BEAUTIFUL RUINED SCENERY SPROUTS UP AROUND THEM.

THEY ARE DANCING TOGETHER AT THE END OF THE WORLD, YOU GUYS. I CAN'T EVEN.

This show. THIS SHOW.

Bonus! I am so far pretty impressed with the couple of secondary female characters. They don't appear all that often, but when they do, they're AWESOME.

THIS SHOW LOOKS AMAZING AND I WOULD DESPERATELY LIKE TO WATCH IT RIGHT NOW.

but i do not know what noitaminA is, or what time/channel this suggests no.6 is running on. or can I find it online maybe? DDDD: I DESPERATELY need a new BL-ish series, it's been so long...

It's being streamed on crunchyroll, or you can get torrents for the episodes from places like tokyotosho.

noitaminA is a late night time slot on Japanese TV (no idea what channel) that's known for broadcasting slightly "different" or "artsy" anime - Mononoke (uber-artsy historical horror) and Horou Musuko (a gentle slice of life show about transgender kids) both broadcast during that slot. I didn't know No. 6 had the slot when I started it, or I might have expected more of it than a crappy excuse for slashy boys. XD;

IKR?!

I'm also kind of liking Dantalion - it doesn't have much plot, but it's so atmospheric and the music is so nice. Three anime in one season I'm enjoying?! UNPOSSIBLE.

Ooh. I'll have to try that one too. :D (I'm also gonna check out Blood C and Nyanpire just...because, but I'm not sure how good I think either of 'em are going to be.)

Blood C has so far been dead boring, but somehow I just... keep watching the next episode. Idek why. (The monster designs are kind of awesome, though.)

Most everyone who liked Mononoke and Mushishi also likes Natsume Yuujinchou. I don't love it on the level of Mononoke and Mushishi, but it's sweet and languid and whimsical. Also, bonus slashy bits.

This show has been making me very happy. Their love is so pure omg. Also I can't stop thinking about this stupid song in relation to Nezumi, which drives me crazy. Disney has ruined my life.

OMG YOU READ THE NOVELS. I wish I could read the novels. ;; I srsly spent like 2hrs straight earlier today scouring the internet until I found someone explaining how the series ends, because I could totally not handle the possibility of this show breaking my heart. o_o

I already had this bookmarked mentally as "check it out," but with this post, yeah, let's just say I'm not gonna miss it. (Also loves Shakespeare and literature in addition to pretty young men, and the rats thing reminds me of Banksy, haha).

YOU SEE, YOU SEE!

(And yes! There's Safu, who's the same age as Shion and was a fellow child genius on the fast track with him - Shion gets knocked off, she stays. Her specialty is the brain, and despite being a very emotional person, she interprets everything like a ROBOT, which is absolutely hysterical. She has a long-standing thing for Shion. I was afraid she'd drop out of the story once their paths diverged, but instead it seems she's some how tied into the whole mystery, although it isn't clear how yet.

Then there's Inukashi - yes, her name is Dog Keeper - who was literally raised by a dog. She's a wild child, obvsly, and has a pack of dogs that respond to her emotive state and protect her viciously. She's also involved in trafficking information from the city. She and Nezumi seem to have some epic frenemies thing going on.)

YES YES I SEE
THANK YOU VERY MUCH

(Okay yeah both of those girls sound amazing.

RAISED BY DOGS GIRL WHO'S INVOLVED IN INFORMATION TRAFFICKING especially.)

Aug. 7th, 2011 03:28 pm (UTC)
I'm... I'm not even sure it qualifies as "slashy" anymore. Especially after reading some translated excerpts from the books. I seriously can only read this as straight-up romance. XD;

I just finished this show! IT IS REALLY AMAZING <3 I like how a lot of stuff is implied, the imagery (them dancing and the scenery! yeah!), and it's a show with a gay couple with a plot separate from their love and DOGKEEPER IS WHAT GENDER? HELLO HOW CAN THIS GET ANY BETTER?!
