o.m.g. SHUT UP.

And now I take a brief break from my unending bout of SEVERE UNRELENTING ANXIETY to mention that if you are complaining about how the biology in Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan doesn't make sense, YOU ARE MISSING THE POINT, GOOD SIR OR MADAM, AND YOU ARE MISSING IT SO HARD. Why are you even here? Go read something boring.

(I don't even understand this. Do people complain about, I don't know, tales of medieval knights, because the dragon couldn't possibly fly with wings that size?)

WAT. Why would they? I mean. CAN THEY NOT FEEL JOY? DELIGHT?

I really really love those books and it makes me sad there are complainers

I DON'T KNOW! I just... I DON'T UNDERSTAND. Where did they get the impression it was SUPPOSED to make sense? DO THEY NOT UNDERSTAND THAT THAT WOULD UTTERLY KILL THE MAGIC. HOW CAN THEY NOT.

It must be so boring inside their heads, I mean really. WHY CAN'T YOU JUST ACCEPT THE FLYING WHALE THING AND THE BOMBER BATS AND THE MECHS?! This is steampunk at some of it's finest! It is aesthetically and emotionally pleasing for it to work that way! THE MAGIC. AUGH.

(also the complaint about how it wasn't alternate history enough or didn't have enough ~TEEN ROMANCE~ kind of made me seethe.)

EXACTLY. EXACTLY. Idk, all I can think is maybe they mistook it for hard sf.

Yeah, I will never understand negative reviews that are like, I HATE THIS BOOK FOR NOT BEING SOMETHING IT WAS NEVER TRYING TO BE. It's like giving a recipe a bad review because you wanted beef and it calls for chicken.

I've seen a lot of people giving steampunk a hard time because it is sorely lacking in realism, (and yes, there are people who bitch about dragon designs because biologically speaking that wouldn't/couldn't enable them to fly/breathe fire/talk) and I think THEY ARE MISSING THE POINT.

Take comfort in this simple fact: It's not for them.

And of course, that it is a damn popular book. There is very rarely a copy in in the library system where I work. we've got I think, 10 copies of Leviathan and it is ALWAYS checked out or on hold.

I saw one person whose complain (in that vein) was that Derryn couldn't ACTUALLY be a 15 year old girl because she wasn't BOY CRAZY ENOUGH. HAET.

Hard-sf fans? No, no they can't.

This seems to be a problem in particular among a particular subset of hard-sf geeks. They'll read things that aren't hard-sf, but they can never quite shut off the parts of their brains that go "but that isn't how physics/biology/science-in-question works!"

I think in this case the reviewer wasn't even a hard-sf geek - I had the impression this person (and a sizable selection of others!) just INEXPLICABLY thought it was SUPPOSED to make sense! I just. Why would you come into a story so obviously and gleefully about the funtrain and think the biology is supposed to be workable, WHY?

Yeah, I think we already had a WWI fought with actual science. That was...WWI.

I'M SURE THEY DO. I'D BET MONEY ON IT. There are many things I love about nerds; this quality is not one of them. It goes beyond just being detail-oriented to something like tone-deafness, seeing the world as a pile of loose parts with no interest in or understanding of larger wholes.
